An article on Thai-Indians in Guru Magazine stirs debate Print E-mail

September 20, 2007

by Satya Adhar

A couple of weeks back Bangkok Post Magazine "Guru" featured an article on Indians in Thailand. The article was apparently written by a Punjabi Thai-Indian to offer a humorous, satirical look at the lifestyle of young Thai-Indians.  Sample this " Punjabis are the loudest, biggest and most hairy people in the whole damn universe. Two hundred years ago, Punjabi scientists sent research teams to the far corners of the world to find a race totally opposite to ours. Years later we discovered the most gentle, soft-spoken and hairless people on Earth: The Siamese."

Although there were many who admired this column, there were some with whom this style of humor did not go well. Evidently they complained, sent hate mails and even accused the article of racism.

As per the latest information, the column which was started with the aim to give some voice to the young generation of Thai-indian community, has been discontinued.
