Star Alliance Air India is soon expected to join the Star Alliance, a grouping of 17 international airlines, even as negotiations are on with Jet Airways for a similar pact, Economic Times reported.

Star Alliance, the world's first ever multilateral aviation alliance celebrated 10 years of existence in May 2007. What started off as an alliance of five like minded airlines, has grown to currently 17 member carriers flying more than 406 million passengers a year to some 855 destinations in 155 countries.

“We have defied many sceptics who saw us as a marketing gag which was only going to last two years”, said Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance. “Today, nearly 30% of global air travelers use the services of our member carriers or looking at if from an overall industry perspective, two thirds of world-wide air travellers is one of the three airline alliances.”

Star Alliance was voted Best Airline Alliance by Business Traveller Magazine in 2003 and 2006 and by Skytrax in 2003 and 2005. The members are Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, bmi, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, SWISS, TAP Portugal, THAI, United and US Airways. Regional member carriers Adria Airways (Slovenia), Blue1 (Finland) and Croatia Airlines enhance the global network. Air China, Shanghai Airlines and Turkish Airlines have all been accepted as future members and are expected to join Star Alliance soon.
