October 24, 2007 by Hemant How would I know? I am vegetarian. This silly answer was always presented to me when I asked the question of chicken and egg. Somehow people got the impression that I am looking upon them as source of higher knowledge and hence such 'complex' philosophical question. So they have to answer 'smartly'.
Honestly I find this question, absolutely foolish. In fact it is a great example of thinking within square. When asked this question, you are bound to think within the parameters of chicken or the egg, forgetting that they make your boundaries-Your 'box'. Those who answer as above are still stuck in the same box by refusing the reality that they too are in the box.
Sounds crazy? It is. This is where and how one starts making a note on their current state of mind. I hear so many times quotes from popular, best selling, help your miserable self books, that now it makes me sick. I have become allergic to such quotes and books from where they quote. Don't get me wrong. Some of them are very fine books but most of them are not in the league. Purpose of any self help book or literature, supposedly guiding all the readers to better life, should, at least not make them chicken in the box! Or if you wish the egg in the basket or for vegetarian readers fruits in the fridge. So, what to do? My answer is ... Nothing. The problem starts when you start doing something because you should not do something else. Instead, why not just listen to some music. Or simply close your eyes, breath deeply. If possible take a quick nap. Do anything different then your routine reflex action that your mind is so used to. Remember do anything that your mind is NOT USED to.
How does this crazy idea will help? To start with, it will take your mind off from familiar territory in which it usually prefers to stay. This is how you break the barriers of conventional thinking. Comfort zones are bad for personal development. Physical, environmental, emotional and intellectual, in all aspects comfort zones hamper evolution. Initially you may not feel any different but do make a note of things you did and read them next day. Probably you will see the behavioral difference just by doing things you are not used to. Changes occur very subtle and smooth. People around you will notice it more immediately then you would.
In following articles I would demonstrate with example and case studies on how to think out of box and how people responded to it. Work involved is fun and at times bizarre too but one thing for sure, it is ever entertaining and beneficial. In the end one will benefit and if not, at least will have a good laugh.
Send in your comments / questions and I will try my best to respond to each of them if possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
