Most of the people confuse the role of 'heart' and 'mind'. Since ancient times, heart was associated with life, emotions and feelings. Where as mind was always associated with intelligence, rational and reasoning.
Confusion in the role of heart and mind leads to conflict and conflicts create tension in life. Going back to earlier articles and reasoning presented, life is simple, let's keep that way. One exercise that will help keep it simple is to keep the heart and mind constrained to their role.
First of all, let's understand what does it mean to 'live with your heart and think with your mind'.
Do you remember, one day, when you were walking down the street, or travelling by bus/train or you were in supermarket or mall, in other words you were in some public place. You catch a glimpse of person. You have never seen that person, you will never see that person again. Still for some reason, you feel very attracted to that person. That person does not even resemble anyone from you past. That person is not even attractive or looking something extraordinarily different. That person is just another ordinary human being. Could be a man, a woman, an old man, a little kid, a street vendor, a taxi driver ... just anybody.
On the other hand, you see someone, in similar situation and this time instead, you feel like going and slapping that person or simply you just don't like that person. For no reason at all. |

November 27, 2007 by Hemant 'Do what you ought to do and when done take the full responsibility of the result.' Now that's the full title. I think I will have to rethink on title of my topics. They are getting longer and longer.
One more of those cliché statements I am so bored of. 'You must learn to take responsibility'. Sure, tell me where is the nearest school that teaches how to take responsibility.
Let me start by question, does any one really know what it is 'taking responsibility' ?
Most of the time the actions taken by individuals is either driven by opinion based on belief or someone else's suggestions. Actions are not taken consciously or having given proper thought to what would be consequence. This is true in very simplistic way and if you apply simple sense to any action taken, you will see it more clearly.
This is the next step in thinking outside the box.
Sunita, always complained about how her life was so miserable. Most of the time she blamed others for those so called 'miseries' of her life. Always, she had someone else or something else to blame.

November 07, 2007 by Hemant First case study I would take is of Mahesh. The names are changed but the case study is real.
He is in his early 30s. Recently married, moved to Thailand, for career purposes. Well educated, modern couple and very health conscious too. Everyday they spent time doing some yoga in the morning. Vegetarian meals and avoiding all processed food is their way of life.
Still one day, Mahesh calls up to meet me. His issue was that he was getting too edgy and was shouting at his wife for no reasons at all. This was creating friction and a bit of rift in their relationship. This has happened very suddenly and he had no clue why? Self conscious that he was, at least he did notice difference in his own behaviour.
My first obvious questions to him were in regards to his blood pressure, any big changes at work and other routine questions that would ask. Answer to most of the questions were no except he never measured his blood pressure. I suggested he should do that and inform me in a day or two.
Next day he reported back that he had his blood pressure on higher side of normal limit. Not yet demanding medication but it was higher then normal. In our second session of discussion, I explained him that high blood pressure definitely means higher stress level. He laughed at it first and ruled it out saying he can't be stressed because he practices yoga every day. |

October 24, 2007 by Hemant How would I know? I am vegetarian. This silly answer was always presented to me when I asked the question of chicken and egg. Somehow people got the impression that I am looking upon them as source of higher knowledge and hence such 'complex' philosophical question. So they have to answer 'smartly'.
Honestly I find this question, absolutely foolish. In fact it is a great example of thinking within square. When asked this question, you are bound to think within the parameters of chicken or the egg, forgetting that they make your boundaries-Your 'box'. Those who answer as above are still stuck in the same box by refusing the reality that they too are in the box.
Sounds crazy? It is. This is where and how one starts making a note on their current state of mind. I hear so many times quotes from popular, best selling, help your miserable self books, that now it makes me sick. I have become allergic to such quotes and books from where they quote. Don't get me wrong. Some of them are very fine books but most of them are not in the league. Purpose of any self help book or literature, supposedly guiding all the readers to better life, should, at least not make them chicken in the box! Or if you wish the egg in the basket or for vegetarian readers fruits in the fridge. So, what to do? My answer is ... Nothing. The problem starts when you start doing something because you should not do something else. Instead, why not just listen to some music. Or simply close your eyes, breath deeply. If possible take a quick nap. Do anything different then your routine reflex action that your mind is so used to. Remember do anything that your mind is NOT USED to.

October 17, 2007 by Hemant This is the standard response when you ask this question to anyone. People feel ashamed of accepting the fact that they are stressed. There is nothing wrong in being stressed. In fact I see that as sign of being alive and responsive to the surroundings and ever changing conditions in our life. This is particularly true for people from south and south east Asia. Call it cultural conditioning or age old practise, people from this region do not express their emotions well enough. In fact keen observation will show that they do not express their emotions at all. Suppressed emotions result in ill health. Conditions like high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, hyper tension, body pain, sleeplessness, lack of focus, lack of energy, etc. If you look around, the number of young people suffering from heart diseases is rising alarmingly. Blaming it on bad food habits is not going to change the fact of the matter. Food/diet is only part of the problem. The picture is incomplete if other factors like life style, stress, emotional problems, fears, phobias, conditioning and other such mental / emotional aspects are not taken in to consideration. Then suddenly someone would stand up and argue, well so what's new? Every second 'expert' says this. People don't need convincing any more. It has been accepted beyond doubt. So what's the solution. I wish there were a simpler solution to such a complex issue. But the good news is, there is a way to live better life. Through a little bit of self discipline, motivation and a little bit of creative thinking. Before people get excited about this way to live better life, remember one thing, no one way is the right way. No one method would be suitable for all, just like no one person is similar to other. So keeping our individual uniqueness in mind, one needs to formulate and fine tune the ways to live better.
