Sukhumvit district is not only a commercialized place , it is Bangkok expat's home. Sukhumvit area is a hectic downtown and with luxouries hotels and condominiums. A large expat community and many tourists, means foreigners of all descriptions are especially well catered for when it comes to things to see and do here, day or night. And yet the bustle of the streets - especially the abundant pavement vendors and snarled traffic - still offers the relentless sensory bombardment that is so typically Bangkok.
Today, Sukhumvit is heart of the city , plenty of entertainment for all ages. Most of the embassies is located at the downtown.
The Forbes' list of billionaires has two gentlemen Chaleo Yoovidhya on the 279th position and Dietrich Mateschitz on 287th position who owe their fortune to Red Bull or Krating Daeng as we know it in Thailand.
Red Bull is the brand name of an energy drink that originated from Thailand and is now popular throughout the world. Sold as an energy drink to combat mental and physical fatigue, it contains caffeine twice as much as found in a can of Coke.
The person who made Red Bull famous in the world was Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur. Before launching, Mateschitz hired a market research firm to test Red Bull's acceptance. The result was a catastrophe. "People didn't believe the taste, the logo, the brand name," he recalls now with a smile. "I'd never before experienced such a disaster."
More than 100 films from about 30 countries including India will feature in the fifth Bangkok International Film Festival (BIFF) that is scheduled to be held from 19-29 July, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
The festival, which was to be held in January, was postponed due to the unavailability of screening theatres. “But we are all set to go now,” said Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, Chief Officer of the BIFF, who will be overseeing the festival, this year.
He stated that it would be a “streamlined festival, where we’ve trimmed off the excesses and added, “The focus will be on quality films which is really the heart of any film festival.” “This year, our main focus will be to provide the movie-loving audiences of Bangkok, with the films they’ve been waiting to see."
While there would still be a Red Carpet Opening night, it would be on a more modest scale as compared to previous festivals, in keeping with the Sufficiency Economy Theory of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Every May, the Kingdom of Thailand celebrates the Royal Ploughing Day in the Royal Field or Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace. While the religious rites welcoming the new planting season has remained unchanged since ancient times, the actual day of the ceremony varies from year to year as the date and time are set by Royal Brahmin astrologers. This year, the ceremony falls on the 10 th of May 2007.
This Hindu rite reflects the Brahmin influence in Thailand and has been practiced for thousands of years in India, even before the origin of Buddhism. As Prince Siddhartha, Lord Buddha also took part in this auspicious ceremony.
Their Majesty the King and Queen are also present in this auspicious ceremony. His Majesty the King appoints the Ploughing Lord as his representative to carry out the holy rites. The ceremony not only marks the start of the new rice-growing season but also assures a successful planting season and an abundance of crops.
Saturday, May 5 marks the 57th anniversary of the Coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. The day is celebrated as a national holiday.
Although Thailand is now a democratic nation, the people still holds the highest reverence for the Kingdom's Royalty. This can be seen as the nation comes together on the 5th of each year to celebrate the Coronation Day of the ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty.
Although His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej assumed his kingship on June 9, 1946; he was officially proclaimed the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty in accordance with the ancient royal tradition on May 5, 1950. The anniversary of this day has been observed as a public holiday ever since. Every year, Thai people rejoice and express their affection and loyalty to His Majesty the King by organizing a celebration on his coronation day. On this day, His Majesty the King also presents royal decorations to those who have made valuable contributions to the country.
Hundreds of thousands of devotees participate every year in the nine-day Navaratri festival in honor of the Goddess at the Sri Mariamman temple in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The rush is so heavy that the adjacent Silom Road, a major thoroughfare, is closed to traffic for hours at peak times. This would all be quite typical for a Hindu temple in Delhi or Calcutta during any of our major festivals, but this is Thailand, and the Thai Buddhist devotees at this Navaratri festival outnumber Hindus ten to one. There are just 100,000 Hindus in Thailand, mostly relatively recent immigrants, with about eleven Hindu temples. But Hinduism, which first arrived here from South India over 2,000 years ago, permeates Thai religion and culture. Consider, for example, that the King has his own brahmin priest of Thai ancestry, or that the Thai script is based upon the South Indian Grantha script.
Songkran" is a word from the Sanskrit language which means to "move into" and refers to the orbit of the sun moving into Aries. It marks the end of a 12-month cycle and the beginning of a new solar year. Songkran is therefore the Thai New Year celebrations.
This traditional Thai custom of merry-making is the Kingdom's most 'sanuk' (fun-filled) festival, celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm, nation-wide, once a year. In most parts of the country, Songkran extends over a period of 3 days.
Known the world-over for its characteristic tradition of water-throwing ranging from a courteous sprinkle or a polite splash, to harmless water pistols and showers from garden hoses to the well-aimed bucket or water-cannon delivered in a festive spirit. Without a doubt, on the practical side, Songkran is a refreshing solution to "beating the heat" in the hottest season of the year. There is a however a much deeper significance to "Songkran".
The best way to describe “Contemporary Art’ is art produced in the present to depict this very moment in time. Yesterday marked a significant first in Thailand’s art world as Gallery Soulflower launched the Kingdom’s first modern Contemporary Indian Art exhibition entitled Reading Paint.
H.E. Latha Reddy, Indian Ambassador to Thailand was the Chief Guest of the Opening Reception and truly appreciated the paintings displayed in the gallery.
Natasha Tuli of Gallery Soulflower describes the gallery as a place where you can see ‘good art from new and upcoming artists from all over India.’
We have seen Darlie toothpaste in almost all the shopping places in Thailand. It was never available in India but has been pretty popular in South East Asia, Hong Kong and China. It has an interesting story related to its name. Darlie (Traditional Chinese: 黑人 hēirén, or "black man") is a toothpaste brand of the Hong Kong based company Hawley & Hazel. It was bought in 1985 by the US corporation Colgate-Palmolive. At that time the original name was "Darkie". Darky, or darkie, is a racist term used primarily in the Southern United States to refer to black people. The package featured an image of a wide-eyed, smiling dark-skinned African male wearing a top hat and tie.
It all started with a post on the Thaindian forums here from Mr. Souvik Datta who mentioned that the ISKCON temple in Bangkok is actually not a part of ISKCON as we know it and the president of the temple falsely claims it to be an ISKCON temple. He also showed a letter from Governing Body Council member of ISKCON, His grace Kabichandra Maharaj which can be accessed here .
This was echoed by several others forumists and it seems that there is something wrong in the entire scheme of things. Thaindian did some research and found something worth sharing:
