Dhoom Dadakka - an unfunny comedy Print E-mail

A still from the movie Dhoom DadakkaFilm: “Dhoom Dadakka”; Cast: Sammir Dattani, Shama Sikandar, Shaad Randhawa, Aarti Chhabria, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik and Gulshan Grover; Director: Shashi Ranjan; Ratings: None By the time Sammir Dattani and Shaad Randhawa get into drag, this unfunny comedy has dragged on way past ‘bad’ time.

Everyone uniformly hams through this painful piece of cinematic travesty. There is so much screaming and ranting across the length and breadth of this outrageous ode to idiocy that you wonder if the producer-director Shashi Ranjan intended to provide earplugs for all those brave hearts who would sit to the end of this haphazard comedy of terrors.

No earplugs, what we get are shrill banshee ring-tones of risqué ragas sung at an ear-splitting pitch, and phallic jokes.

If lately you’ve been wondering where the Bollywood comedy has been heading, here’s the answer.

Comedies can’t get any baser or brainless than “Dhoom Dadakka”. The gags make you gag. The items and innuendoes are embarrassing not because they try hard to be vulgar, but because they fail miserably to be sexy.

Jiah Khan matches Aamir kick for kick in 'Ghajini' Print E-mail

May 10, 2008
By Subhash K. Jha/Newsdesk

Deepika Padukone in sareeWhile Deepika Padukone is busy matching Akshay Kumar’s kicks and somersaults in Bangkok for “Chandni Chowk To China”, Jiah Khan has in Hyderabad done stunts to equal none other than Aamir Khan. Though thankfully the “Nishabd” fame actress hasn’t had any mishaps yet, her lithe stunts in A.R. Murugadoss’ “Ghajini” are every bit as heart-in-the-mouth as Aamir’s.

Jiah is reluctant to talk about it. She said: “I can’t! I’m not allowed to. But, yes, I’ve done a lot of action scenes in ‘Ghajini’. They’ve been extremely unnerving.”

The action sequences require Jiah to match Aamir kick for kick. “And they are one reason I had to lose weight,” she admitted having returned from Hyderabad where the film was being shot.

“The schedules won’t suffer because of Aamir’s accident at all. We resume in the middle of May as per schedule.” Aamir injured his hamstring muscle twice on the sets of the film. He is on bed rest.

On Tuesday, Jiah started shooting in Mumbai for Ken Ghosh’s film with Shahid Kapur. “That’s the film I’m not supposed to do,” she joked.

Rumours are rife that she sent over-friendly messages to Shahid.

But she said: “I’ve never sent SMSs to people in the industry beyond work. I’m so new to all this manipulation, scheming and negativity. I’m just so happy to be doing two films like ‘Ghajini’ and Ken Ghosh’s film where I’ve completely different roles.”

IIFA controversy: Amitabh Bachchan picks on Shatrughan Sinha in his blog Print E-mail
April 23, 2008
by News Desk / IANS

Amitabh Bachchan Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan in his blog has lashed out against Shatrughan Sinha's insinuations that the nominations list of the International Indian Film Academy awards were fixed.

He says in the blog: "A section of the print media carried comment from my colleague and friend and neighbour, Mr Shatrughan Sinha. It reportedly quoted his reactions to the nomination list of the IIFA Awards, wherein he has purportedly stated that " Sab kissika beta hai, ya kissiki bahu, ya kissiki biwi " , and the media adding there interpretation to it, stating that this was directed to a particular family of 'guru' fame.
I believe what is being insinuated is that there is partiality or some 'fixing' in the choice of the nominations carried by IIFA. And as the report concluded, the indication was towards one family, not difficult to guess which one.

Krazzy 4 Review: Wacky Krazzy 4 will have you in splits Print E-mail

By Subhash K. Jha

Krazzy 4Film: “Krazzy 4″; Cast: Irrfan Khan, Arshad Warsi, Rajpal Yadav, Juhi Chawla, Suresh Menon, Rajat Kapoor; Director: Jaideep Sen; Rating: ** “Krazzy 4″ is a refreshing if not riveting change from the risqué-driven, innuendo-laden comedies that have recently infested our theatres.

Stand-up comedian Suresh Menon, playing one of four psychologically disturbed protagonists, utters barely one word in the film.

“Kidnap!” he stammers to tell his associates that the sweet doctor Juhi Chawla has been whisked away by baddies, who look like they could do with a spot of training in crime management.

The method behind Aamir Khan's many moves Print E-mail
April 12, 2008
By Chitra Padmanabhan (IANS)

Aamir KhanThe Indian national football team captain, Bhaichung Bhutia, barely squeezed in 11 minutes of the mandatory 15 minutes of fame for his principled decision not to carry the Beijing bound Olympic torch in Delhi on April 17. Reason: somewhere between the 10th and the 11th minute his thunder was stolen by actor/director Aamir Khan who stated that he had a different way of wearing his conscience on his sleeve.
He would carry the torch but with a prayer in his heart for the people of Tibet; the Games did not belong to China but to the human race. On screen, it would be called a nuanced piece of method acting. Off-screen it is called positioning. Or is it just a coincidence that among the human race that owns the Games are official sponsors Coca-Cola, a brand Khan carries a torch for through endorsements? Poor man, he will be running multiple overlaps - carrying the Olympic torch as a Coke team member, for himself, for humanity’s claim to the Games and, simultaneously, for the Tibetan cause against China’s oppression. That’s a lot of running of the treadmill kind.

by News Desk / IANS

Guide PosterLegendary Indian actor Dev Anand has approached Goldstone Technologies Ltd Hyderabad to recolourise and restore the prints of his 1965 classic "Guide", which is chosen to be screened in the "Classics" section of the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival.

"The original negative of 'Guide' has gone through a lot of wear and tear over the years and there are a lot of scratch marks on it. So, the print needs to be restored as the movie is highly popular even today.

Dev Anand approached us again for the job and we are working on it," Travis Caddell, managing director of Goldstone Technologies Ltd, told IANS by phone from Hyderabad Tuesday.

The Hyderabad-based Goldstone recently colourised Navketan's 1959 black and white hit "Hum Dono", which had Dev Anand in a double role. Nanda and Sadhna played his leading ladies.

"Guide", in which Dev Anand plays the role of a tour guide who finds himself entangled in the affairs of a woman caught in a marital discord that drives him to the brink of his own life, will be shown in the "Classics" section at the Cannes.

123 is a war of nerves between its writer and audience Print E-mail

March 30 , 2008

By Subhash K. Jha

123 Bollywood MovieFilm: 123; Cast: Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Tusshar Kapoor, Esha Deol, Sameera Reddy, Scipt & Direction: Ashwini Dheer; Rating:** This guy comes into the comedy quite early to serve Sameera Reddy, a car showroom owner, a notice. He smiles and delivers his murderous missive, turns around, frowns and vanishes.

The thing about Ashwini Dheer’s flaky but funny farce is that it has accomplished comic actors in the smallest of parts. Watch out for the seasoned Marathi actress who plays Tusshar’s mother. All she wishes for her son is that he excels in his work, namely killing people.

She sends him off on his first contract-killing mission in Pondicherry (where most of the knock-kneed, but never hackneyed action unfolds). Tusshar ends up at the doorstep of the wrong person - a loud Tamilian scrambled-brained lingerie designer. Esha Deol is cute and loud as the designer.

Lingerie, or “kachcha-banyan”, as Paresh Rawal insists on calling them plays a big part in covering up the broadly exposed bases in this situational comedies, where the best moments are those that actors take over from the screenwriter and make their own.
