July 07, 2007 By Satya Adhar From being a multi-millionaire tycoon to becoming a bankrupt and once again a success story, life has taken a full circle for Sirivat Voravetvuthikun - a la "Ta Ra Rum Pum". It was a decade back in July 1997, the Bank of Thailand removed the Dollar-Thai peg that led to the infamous economic crisis.
Sirivat Voravetvuthikun was one of those individuals who made fortune form bourse movements. He played the stock market and invested in real estate. He then borrowed at exhorbitant interset rates to develop a luxury resort in Bangkok. Unfortunately for him, the stock market crased leaving Voravetvuthikun $30.4 million in debt.
It was definitely a difficult time for him but in order to survive he and his wife decided to make and sell sandwiches. It has been exactly a decade since the crisis and he is again a success story. His business, which includes two coffee shops and a sushi catering service, employs 14 people. He is a living example of the fact that Tough times don't last, Tough people do.

July 05, 2007 By News Desk The "land mafia" in Delhi seems to be turning its attention to non-resident Indians (NRIs) whose absence is usually long enough to grab their land and sell it illegally at whopping prices, reports The Times of India .
Four cases of unauthorized occupation of land, known here as land grabbing, that Delhi Police are investigating show how well-off NRIs are falling easy prey to such gangs.
Police officials say the land mafia - mostly a bunch of unscrupulous real estate agents - form a well-organised network to keep a close watch on the lands and properties of those NRIs who hardly visit the city.

July 04, 2007 By News Desk One of the letters written by Gandhiji was withdrawn from Christie's auction house London so that it could be handed over to the Indian Government. Apparently, the letter was written by Mahatma Gandhi 19 days before his assassination by Nathuram godse on January 30, 1948. This has been a commendable task done by the Indian government. The letter was expected to be sold for up to $24,000.
Christie's is a fine art auction house, the largest and by some accounts the oldest in the world. It was founded in London, England on 5 December 1766 by James Christie. Christie's soon established a reputation as a leading auction house and is currently the world's largest auction house by revenues. More recently, Christie's has auctioned off artwork and personal possessions linked to historical figures such as Pablo Picasso; Rembrandt; Diana, Princess of Wales; Leonardo da Vinci; Vincent van Gogh; Napoleon Bonaparte; Marilyn Monroe; and others.

July 02, 2007 By K. Rameshkumar Koooool....
Thatz what we can simply say after seeing the crowd in the SFX Cine Complex - Theater 15 in these 2 days. Not only Tamilians, but also a lot of north Indians, Thai, Japanese, and surprisingly some Europeans. Sivaji...Super Star Rajini's latest mega super hit movie got released here on 30th June and 1st July. The 700 seater SFX 15 cinema never got these much audience before, the theater people say. On the first day the show was HOUSE FULL. Even about 30 to 40 tickets were over booked and they've got seats on the walk way in the middle which brings us the good olden our mother country theater memories.
The crowd, the sound, the music, whistling, screaming, etc..etc.. are all new to the Thais. They're already familiar with 007, Jackie, even the Tom Yum Goong hero... But they never seen these kind of experience in Bangkok same like Sivaji. So Rajinikanth has not only broken south and north india divide. But also the world boundaries. This is the 3rd Tamil Movie ever screened in Thailand. The first one was Jeans (Directed by Mr. Shankar - the same director of 'Sivaji'). The second one was 'Kandukondaen Kandukondaen'. And this 'Sivaji' is the 3rd one. But those 2 movies were screend in small theatres and only one show. But 'Sivaji' screened in big seating capacity theater and 2 shows and almost both the shows were heavily crowded. On the 2nd day I've seen a lot of repeated fans (including me ;) Click here for the images. |
