Sangli (Maharashtra), Oct.23, 2007 ANI
Diwali is the festival of lights all over India, but in Sangli Dussehra is celebrated in a similar manner.
People from far off places arrive here to witness the magnificent celebrations of Dussehra with firecrackers. This practice has been followed for over a hundred years. The ostensible reason is that they would like to celebrate the killing of demon King Ravana by Lord Rama on this day.
"The night-long bursting of firecrackers draws people from all over Maharashtra to enjoy the spectacle. This is the pride of our village. This festival is being celebrated since many years", said Ramchandra Thorat, a member of local governing body.
People from all communities dance and indulge in revelry through out the night. There is brilliance and sparkle everywhere. People from all communities participate in the celebrations.
Organised by over 400 small organising committees or Mandals, the firecrackers used are prepared by villagers themselves at the village with no technical or financial support from outside.
"There are 400-500 mandals (small organizing committees) who manage their own expenses. The estimated cost is about rupees 100 million," said P.B.Chavan, a member of the firework organising committee.
People here take several precautions during the fireworks display and take pride in the fact that no untoward incident has ever happened. (ANI) |

Yes, Aishwarya Rai is showing her talent in Hollywood movie The Last Legion. The movie is being screened in Bangkok right now. The Last Legion is a 2007 movie directed by Doug Lefler. It is based on a 2003 Italian novel of the same name written by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. It stars Colin Firth along with Sir Ben Kingsley and Aishwarya Rai, and premiered in Abu Dhabi on April 6, 2007.
Apparently, Aishwarya plays an Indian warrior named Mira and more interestingly her weapon is called Katar.

Accompanied by his friends and a mysterious envoy from Constantinople, Romulus travels to Britannia in search of the last Roman Legion – the fabled Dragon Legion. He will fight alongside his allies to make his last stand for Rome and take his first steps to become the king who would father a legend.

On Board PM's special aircraft, Oct 18 By Ravi Shankar (ANI)
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that the Indo-US nuclear deal was passed by the Cabinet, where major coalition partners had given their consent to it.
On being asked to comment on some of his coalition partners having said that they had reservations about the nuclear deal from the very onset, Singh replied, " This agreement (123-agreement) was approved by the Cabinet. So where is the question of the UPA going back on it?" "This was part and parcel of the Cabinet process," he added.
Earlier, some of the coalition partners, particularly the Sharad Pawar led NCP, Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD and M Karunanidhi led DMK had expressed their reservations about the deal after the Left's opposition to the nuclear agreement reached its zenith, leading to speculation that the Communists may withdraw their support from the Government. During his return from South Africa, where he participated in the tri-lateral IBSA Summit, Singh admitted that if something does not go as planned then it does have an affect and that one has to live with uncertainties.
However, he added that he has not given up the hope on the successful culmination of the nuclear deal and said that there exist 'difficulties'. 'We are in a coalition and we have to find a way out," he said adding, "I have not given up the hope."
He reiterated that his government is not one-issue government and that setback on one issue does not mean the "end of life". "We have done many things and there are lots of things to be done," he added. (ANI)

Nek Chand, the man credited with putting Chandigarh on the international map through his Rock Garden, is glad that his creation from the city waste fascinates crowds from across the world. Over 25 acres several thousand sculptures, made of industrial waste and thrown-away items, are set in large mosaic courtyards linked by walled paths and deep gorges. Nek Chand's creation also combines huge buildings with a series of interlinking waterfalls. “I am not conscious that I have reached such heights. The only thing that makes me glad is that visitors come in large numbers to see the Rock Garden created by me from waste material. People also feel happy to see that the waste which has been thrown away has been shaped so wonderfully,” says Chand. The Rock Garden attracts artists and connoisseurs from all over the world. Chand’s family moved to Chandigarh in 1947, during India-Pakistan Partition. At the time, the city was being redesigned as a modern utopia by the Swiss/French architect Le Corbusier. It was to be the first planned city in India, and Chand found work there as a roads inspector for the Public Works Department in 1951. Chand, a self-taught artist, in his spare time, began collecting materials from demolition sites around the city. “When I was employed with the Public Works Department, Chandigarh, I used to roam all over. I usually found waste material lying on the roads and thought I would collect all and create something out of it. To start with I collected glass bangles and created the few images that impressed me a lot. I then continued creating more images,” says Chand. |
