Air India, the country's biggest overseas carrier, is all set to join the Star Alliance, one of the three global airline groupings. At their annual Board Meeting, the Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of the Star Alliance member airlines voted to accept the application of Air India to become a future member of the alliance.
India has long been on the radar of Star Alliance; after all it is one of the worlds fastest growing economies and aviation markets. Having now come to an agreement with Air India makes us the first airline alliance to secure a member in India, which will enable our customers to receive more benefits when travelling to, from and within India in the future, said Glenn Tilton, Chairman and CEO of United Airlines.
Expressing his happiness over the development, Air India Chairman and Managing Director Vasudevan Thulasidas said: Air India is delighted in being invited to join Star Alliance. This invitation comes in the wake of Air Indias merger with Indias leading domestic carrier Indian Airlines, thus making Air India the prime player in the Indian subcontinent.
In addition, the recently announced fleet expansion of over 100 aircraft will help Air India serve the travelling public better in terms of global reach and services. In being selected as a future Star Alliance member, Air India will add value to passengers patronising member airlines of the alliance, he added.
The specialised teams at Air India, Star Alliance and its member carriers will now be working on the integration process. After completion of this process Air India will become a part of the Star Alliance network.
The carrier will gain access to the over 16,000 daily flights operated by Deutsche Lufthansa AG, UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and the other 17 Star members. (ANI)

The Punjabi Family Mela on Sunday December 9,2007 organized by The Young Thai Sikh Association (YTSA) met astounding success with a very large gathering and lot of fun and frolic.
The crowds had started pouring in - surprisingly - as soon as the Mela opened. In an hour or so, the space in front of the stage was jam-packed. The stage performances were appreciated and especially reflected the amount of effort gone into the preparations. The Bingo literally rocked with the prizes of THB 10,000 and THB 20,000 for the full houses.
Just behind the stage gathering, was space for food stalls which offered a wide variety of cuisines including Chole Bhature, Pizza, Pani Puri, Mango Lassi, Rajma chawal etc. People enjoyed the food up to the hilt.
While the adults were busy enjoying themselves, the kids were engrossed at the other end getting their faces painted, climbing rock, playing ball etc. Many enjoyed taking the "Idiot Test " at Thaindian.com stall and proved that they were smart. It was a well-spent day with lots of fun filled memories. It was heard that the Mela, which was a first this time, will be a regular affair and there could even be two Melas every year. Check out the pics hereto get the complete story.
There is a general consensus on the date of origin of Ramayana and it is believed that the first version was written around 5-1 B.C. Later on there were version written by various poets in various parts of Indian sub continent in various different languages over several centuries. In fact Ramayana travelled beyond boundaries of India and was adopted by other regions like Thailand among other countries.
Ramakien is Thailand's national epic, derived from the Hindu Indian Ramayana epic. A number of versions of the epic were lost in the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. While the main story is identical to that of the Ramayana, many other aspects were transposed into a Thai context, such as the clothes, weapons, topography, and elements of nature, which are described as being Thai in style.
Nevertheless, the Ramayana came to Southeast Asia by means of Tamil Indian traders and scholars who traded with the Khmer kingdoms (such as Funan and Angkor) and Srivijaya, with whom the Indians shared close economic and cultural ties.
In the late first millennium, the epic was adopted by the Thai people, who had migrated to Southeast Asia from southern China. The oldest recordings of the early Sukhothai kingdom, dating from the thirteenth century, include stories from the Ramayana legends. The history of the legends was told in the shade theater (Thai: หนัง, Nang), a shadow-puppet show in a style adopted from Indonesia, in which the characters were portrayed by leather dolls manipulated to cast shadows on a nearby screen while the spectators watched from the other side.[Wikipedia]
